What is a Protection
Order?

A Protection Order is a legal order designed to protect you (and your children) from experiencing further domestic violence. A Protection Order is granted by the Family Court.

A Protection Order contains "standard conditions" which require the respondent (alleged perpetrator), to stop all contact with you (unless you consent to having contact), and to stop using any form of domestic violence against you (and any children you have).

If the respondent breaches the Protection Order you can report this breach to the police, who will have been provided with a copy of your protection order by the Family Court. The police may take action against the respondent for breaching the protection order. This may include bringing charges for breach of protection order which is a criminal offence.

The respondent will also usually be required to attend a "Stopping Violence programme".
